Meghan Markle Talks Royal Romance

Meghan Markle has opened up for the first time about her relationship with Prince Harry.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, the 36-year-old actress and humanitarian said that she and the 33-year-old royal are “really happy and in love”.

Markle also said that Prince Harry’s support has helped her to cope with the media frenzy surrounding her and their relationship.

She spoke of how she has dealt with the constant paparazzi attention:

“It has its challenges, and it comes in waves – some days it can feel more challenging than others. And right out of the gate it was surprising the way things changed. But I still have this support system all around me, and, of course, my boyfriend’s support.”

The beauty also said that she doesn’t read the widespread press coverage of her royal relationship.

Markle, best known for her role as Rachel Zane on the hit TV series “Suits”, began dating the prince in 2016. She says that they managed to keep it quiet for about six months, before it all came to light in November of that year.

The tabloid and social media hysteria that surrounded the news led Prince Harry to release a statement through Kensington palace, defending Markle. He spoke against “the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments”.

This glimpse into this royal romance is rare: it’s a break from tradition to speak openly to the media about a romance with a member of the British royal family.

When pressed, Markle refused to talk about the future prospects of the relationship:

“I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours.”

Should Markle and Prince Harry wed, she would become the first American to marry into the royal family since King Edward VIII married Wallis Simpson, leading to his abdication 81 years ago.

Markle has been married once before, but the marriage only lasted three years, ending in 2013.
