How Well Do You Know Neymar
Regarded as one of the best players in the game, here are some facts you may not know about Neymar.
#1 Responsible for Barcelona President’s Resignation
Neymar ‘had a dream to play in Europe’. That dream came true when three clubs – Barcelona, Real Madrid and English Premier League side Chelsea – all fought for his signature in 2013. He chose Barcelona, signing a five-year contract with the transfer fee initially disclosed at €57.1 million. This made him one of the most expensive transfers from a South American club to Europe.
Spanish tax authorities caught word that his transfer to the Catalan club wasn’t above board. A hearing was called and documents demanded. The documents revealed that Neymar cost Barcelona €86.2 million. These irregularities in paperwork forced then-Barcelona President Sandro Rosell to resign from the club, with Vice-President Josep Maria Bartomeu taking over.
#2 West Ham United Bid On Him
West Ham United was the first club from Europe to bid for the then-16-year-old Neymar. The Londoners were so convinced with his talent that they put in a £12 million bid for his services – the club’s largest ever bid for any player at that time.
His local club turned down the bid, but couldn’t do anything about the attention the bid brought for the youngster. Premier League giants Chelsea caught a whiff of his presence and regularly sent a host of scouts to check on him.
#3 Scored His 100th Professional Goal on His 20th Birthday
For any top footballer, scoring 100 goals in his career is a major landmark. Most of the big names reached this landmark in their early 20’s and maybe even beyond, but Neymar was so good on his feet and so ruthless that he scored his 100th goals a few hours after turning 20.
#4 Only Brazilian Athlete on the Cover of Time Magazine
It may not seem important that a 20-year-old appeared on the cover of TIME magazine, however, to put it into perspective, Brazilian gods in their own right, Ayrton Senna and Pele never appeared on the cover.
